The Lap – 47 Miles of Lake District Beauty, Grit and Glory

The Lap is one of the most scenic, well-organised, and downright enjoyable ultras in the UK – a 47-mile (75 km) loop around Lake Windermere that captures everything we love about running in the Lakes: beauty, brutality and unbeatable camaraderie.

Twice a year, runners from across the country descend on the shores of Windermere to take part in this iconic event. The Lap runs clockwise in May and anticlockwise in September, giving returning runners two completely different experiences on the same legendary route.

Event Overview

  • Distance: 47 miles / 75 km

  • Elevation: around 2,600 – 3,000 m

  • Start / Finish: Low Cunsey Farm, Graythwaite Estate

  • Format: Clockwise (May) / Anticlockwise (September)

  • Cut-off: 24 hours

Often described as a gateway ultra, The Lap is a great choice for both newcomers and seasoned trail runners – though as many participants have discovered, it’s far from easy. The climbs are relentless, the terrain varied, and the views absolutely worth it.

Entries are limited and every event sells out, often months in advance. If you want to be on the start line, you’ll need to move fast when entries open.

Race Organisation and Atmosphere

Runners consistently praise The Lap’s organisation – and for good reason. The event is run by people who genuinely care, and it shows in every detail.

Expect outstanding way-marking (over 2,500 arrows), warm hospitality, and marshals who go above and beyond to help every participant reach the finish.

“Superbly organised and way-marked… and the friendliest, most helpful volunteers imaginable.” – Lostock AC

One thing that really sets The Lap apart is that all marshals are paid and rewarded for their dedication. This professional touch, combined with genuine enthusiasm, creates an incredibly supportive atmosphere from start to finish.

And because The Lap is the most way-marked ultra in the country, it’s ideal for beginners or those who prefer to focus on pacing, nutrition, and the views rather than navigation.

The Route – Scenic, Tough and Unforgettable

The course showcases the best of the Lake District – woodland trails, fell paths, rolling farmland and a few short road sections linking it all together.

You’ll climb local favourites like Latterbarrow, Loughrigg Fell, Wansfell Pike and Gummer’s How. Each ascent rewards you with stunning panoramas and that unmistakable sense of adventure the Lakes are known for.

“In the top three most difficult ultras I’ve done, but also in the top three most enjoyable.” – Richard Gower

It’s a tough day out: no single climb is extreme, but the total ascent adds up quickly. By the final few miles, even the smaller hills feel huge – and that’s exactly why finishing The Lap feels so special.

Feed Stations – Fuel for the Journey

Feed stations on The Lap are legendary. They’re not just pit stops; they’re mini-feasts of runner-friendly food and Cumbrian hospitality.

You’ll find sandwiches, fruit, pretzels, crisps, sweets – and the highlight everyone talks about – the best wood-fired pizza for runners in the world. None of your supermarket slices here. This is freshly baked, traditional-style pizza, cooked on-site in a wood-fired oven and served hot to tired, hungry runners. No expense is spared when it comes to looking after participants.

Every station is also stocked with Mountain Fuel products to keep you performing at your best:

  • Xtreme Energy Fuel – rapid carbs and electrolytes for steady energy.

  • Sports Jellies – smooth, gut-friendly energy boosts for when solid food won’t go down.

  • Ultra Chia Gels – slow-release energy with natural hydration support.

  • FeelGoodBars - Easy to eat on the go, healthy energy in every bite

“Aid stations that have every type of food or drink you could need. Course marking is second to none.” – Trail Run Advisor

Add in the friendly marshal teams who’ll fill your bottles, cheer you on and share a laugh mid-race, and you’ll see why so many runners return year after year.

Training and Preparation

While the generous 24-hour cut-off makes The Lap accessible, it’s still a serious challenge. Even seasoned ultra-runners call it one of the toughest events on the calendar.

“Wanted under 12 hours but my legs were shot over the last 20 km.” – Steel City Striders

Training priorities:

  • Build long runs and back-to-back sessions to get used to time on feet.

  • Focus on hill work – both climbs and descents.

  • Practise your fuelling little and often (with the products you’ll use on race day).

  • Train with your full pack and race kit.

  • Prepare for every kind of Lake District weather.

Those who respect the route, fuel consistently and manage their pacing almost always finish strong – and smiling.

The Lap Experience

The Lap captures the best of the Lakes: spectacular scenery, unrelenting terrain, and a shared spirit that brings everyone together. It’s more than a race – it’s an experience.

You’ll come away with tired legs, a full heart, and stories that will last far longer than the soreness.

Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply chasing daylight around Windermere, remember: underestimate the hills at your peril, but never underestimate yourself.
