Mountain Fuel Drugs Free statement

Our Experience
In 2014 we had first hand experience of what it’s like as a nutrition company to have one of your products brought into question through a potential third party contamination and for the sake of everyone involved we really don’t want to be in that position again! Despite only using food ingredients (a blend of carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins and amino acids) that do not appear on the the WADA list of banned substances as these ingredients feature in your every day foods and purchasing and blending our products in an accredited facility we found ourselves in the position whereby two athletes each tested positive for minuscule amounts of banned substances.  There were a number of anomalies for us especially as both athletes along with others had
been tested as negative using product in question, try getting your head around that one! Thankfully we were able to assist at the tribunal and the athletes suspensions were lifted but it was a terrible experience for all involved.

We can attempt to dissect, speculate and wonder at the whole scenario but ultimately we had to look at the entire process, ingredients, blending and packing and ensure that there could never be any possibility of any potential cross contamination. We’ve done this by ensuring that all of our suppliers only handle ‘food’ based ingredients and in addition we currently test individual batches for banned substances with LGC. However as the ‘tested athlete’ makes up a very small % of our sales and the tests themselves are expensive we will have specific batch tested products available for these athletes on request.

Here are the highlights of our drugs free policy with more details available further down:

  • Products are available that have been tested for banned substances by LGC, a world class lab
  • We offer batch tested products with a test result certificate through the online Mountain Fuel shop
  • Our ingredient supplier, blender and packers do not handle pharmaceutical ingredients
  • Elite Team GB athletes use Mountain Fuel
  • You can use Mountain Fuel products in confidence
  • Mountain Fuel products are not formulated with ingredients from the list of WADA named banned substances*

We produce Mountain Fuel products to the highest standard in a controlled and uncontaminated environment in order to prevent inadvertent doping.

What is the risk of supplement contamination?

Food safety refers to the conditions and practices that preserve the quality of food to prevent contamination and foodborne illness. There is a concern for consumers that dietary supplements may be contaminated with banned substances. The sports supplement industry is very broad, it ranges from companies who supply modified food and whose ingredients are the same as those found in your weekly shopping basket. At the other end of the scale are some supplement companies selling an array of products, which may contain questionable material. Unfortunately we are all grouped under the same heading. There are also very different rules and practices in many countries for manufacturing and labelling of supplements.

Here at Mountain Fuel, the manufacturers and packagers that we use are only responsible for other food stuff with no pharmaceutical products manufactured or packaged, therefore eliminating the risk of any accidental supplement contamination.

We see it as vitally important that our customers are well informed about the quality controls and testing that we and all other sports nutrition brands have in place.

How does Mountain Fuel minimise the risk of supplement contamination?

The procedures that we have in place are completely transparent so that you can always be confident when using Mountain Fuel. It is essential that contamination is deterred from the moment a new product idea is born. We never use ingredients that are on the list of WADA named banned substances. When new products are in the development stage all potential contamination risks of all ingredients are assessed before a product makes it to the production stage and subsequently released on the market.

We take great care when choosing our suppliers.

Product Testing

Based on our suppliers stringent protocols and controls in place, there is no credible risk of WADA banned substance contamination in Mountain Fuel products. In line with many other sports nutrition brands, we batch test for banned substances to verify the procedures we have in place. Samples of every batch tested are kept throughout the product’s shelf life.

Product testing by LGC labs

We randomly test products in a batch using the world-renowned sports doping control and research lab LGC (previously known as HFL), which also runs the Informed-Sport and Informed-Choice supplement testing programmes. Supported by UK Sport, LGC offers a supplement testing service accredited to the ISO 17025 standard. This is an internationally recognised standard for analytical labs and ensures the accredited methods have been shown to be robust, capable of working to the required detection limits every time, and thus ensuring the integrity and consistency of the analytical results. ISO 17025 is the industry standard for an analytical laboratory.

Testing by a trusted lab is important to reassure us and you that Mountain Fuel products are free from relevant contamination of prohibited substances. Besides the ISO 17025 standard LGC also have experience of testing within the framework of WADA. Their testing capability for supplements includes the analysis for over 146 substances that are considered prohibited in sport and substances that pose a threat in respect of product contamination. These substances include anabolic agents, stimulants, beta-2-agonists, recreational drugs and masking agents. Their highly sensitive tests can detect contamination down to 10ng/g for steroids and 100ng/g for stimulants. That’s like testing for a rain drop in an Olympic sized swimming pool. The LGC test is able to analyse all our products for relevant prohibited substances.
