Keswick based Sports Nutrition business Mountain Fuel is proving to be the fuel of choice for our local runners with yet more success at the weekends High Terrain Events 50k & 10k Trail races. Both are challenging courses which take runners around Ennerdale however the longer 50k course also includes running up the valley towards Great Gable and the infamous and remote Black Sail Youth Hostel which is only accessible by foot or mountain bike.

Paul, who also works for High Terrain, the event organisor said, “I’m really pleased with the win and just managed to nip a new course record. Amazing course, fire roads, single tracks, rock hopping and even some scrambling involved! With picturesque views in ever direction to top it off.”

Winner of the 50k trail race was Howard Seal from Cockermouth. Before the race Howard was reported as saying he was going to take it steady as he has run every day in October; this is part of a running challenge where you run one mile extra every day, he’s not made it easy for himself though as he’s also competed in and finished 3rd in the tough 80k 3×3000 Ultra that runs over Scafell Pike, Helvellyn and Skiddaw. So far in October Howard has ran 298 miles with 46,000ft of ascent and there is still 12 days to go!

Howard said, “I set off with every intention of not pushing too hard as I have a lot of running left to do in October. Comfortably in 5th at the mid point and feeling strong, I was able to maintain my pace and close in and pass the runners ahead. With about 4 miles to go I took the lead, finishing 4 minutes ahead of 2nd, I even managing a sprint finish. Delighted with the pace from start to finish meaning only 11 seconds slower on the second, slightly longer, lap. Great event and fantastic end to the season!”

Cumbrian Rupert Bonington, son of local mountaineer Sir Chris and part owner of mountainfuel.co.uk said, “Sport and nutrition is a passion of ours and seeing athletes from all walks of life and ability being able to enjoy what they do, improve and on occasions like this win, gives us a lot of pleasure. We love the Lake District and having a business that helps people get out and enjoy it as much as we do is an honor and privilege.”
