Trail Marathon Nutrition Guide

Whether you're chasing a podium, hunting a personal best on the trails, or simply aiming to reach the finish line smiling, the right fuel at the right time makes all the difference.

Trail marathons are different. Terrain changes rhythm. Climbs spike effort. Descents tax the legs. Technical sections demand focus. All of this increases energy demand — often unpredictably.

This guide is built around the Mountain Fuel system — a proven approach trusted by elite and everyday athletes alike. These are not sponsored endorsements. They are athletes who choose to purchase and use the system because it works.

Read on, plan well, and if you have any questions, get in touch.

In The Build-Up

Eat normally in the week leading into your race, avoiding heavily processed or fast food. Focus on balanced meals made from fresh ingredients.

Hydration should be consistent rather than excessive — sip water regularly throughout the day rather than drinking large amounts in one go.

The Days Before

In the days leading up to a trail marathon, preparation is about restoration.

Many of our runners use Night Fuel in the evenings before an event to nourish muscles during sleep — your most restorative state.

Sipping Energy Fuel the day before can also support glycogen replenishment while delivering electrolytes and micronutrients. If you've travelled — particularly if you've flown — hydration becomes even more important. Cabin air is dehydrating, and even mild dehydration can affect performance.

This is a great resource. Having tried energy products from different companies over the last 20 years in events from long distance fell races to long distance cycle races to ultra trail events I can honestly say these products and information is a breath of fresh air, finally products that don't leave you feeling bloated through the race or upset the stomach. I'm looking forwards to continue using all the products in competition soon.

This was a great read to give me clearer guidance on how to achieve a high rate of carbs per hour. I have been experimenting with a number of ways, but to have a structured outline looks like a better plan for me to try.
