I spent my teens and early 20’s playing team sports but then work as a physio got in the way. When you only have limited time off, the convenience of going from the door step is where my love of running started. I started doing local road 5 and 10k’s, then the distances increased and the longer the race the better I faired. After 7 marathons, getting steadily towards the magical sub 3 mark, I finally hit my target with a 2:57 at Amsterdam in 2013. But, running had become all about chasing splits and pb’s, I started to find the training a chore. So, after that marathon I quit road running and now find myself purely running on the fells and trails. I love the variety of terrain, tackling the steep climbs, reccing routes to find the optimal lines, exploring new areas. I’ve continued to increase my distances, having now done 12 ultra marathons, the 30-50 mile ones are my favourites, along with the long fell races.
What I have learned?
As I am racing longer distances, but also more technical routes I’m spending longer time on feet, I’m finding the nutrition is vital; before, during and after. Also, with spending more time training, I need to ensure I’m recovered to tackle the next session. That’s where Mountain Fuel comes in, for me, the need to supplement my usual food with vital products to aid both performance and recovery.
Why I love running?
I love exploring new areas, be it the wilderness of the fells or following a well marked trail in a new area. There is amazing camaraderie among fellow runners, even when racing in direct competition, there’s always time to chat during an ultra!
My favorite achievements?
I was extremely proud to be selected for Great Britain to compete in the Trail World Championships in Annecy in 2015. I can’t wait to get back out in my GB kit having just found out I have been selected for this years Trail World Championships this October in Portugal
My best trail performances have been 4th overall and 1st female at the Lakeland 50 in 2015, 2nd overall and 1st female with a new course record at the High Peak 40 in 2015, and recently 3rd female and 45/ 1302 in the mountain marathon in Annecy 2016.
